The Cloud Becomes the Go-To Platform for Growth

The ‘cloud-first’ strategy doesn’t work everywhere and for everyone, but where it does, it works wonders. Recent studies have found that cloud-centric strategies (SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS) are paying off big time for those with vision. So much so that organizations are now using the cloud as a strategic platform for expanding sales channels and growing customer demand.

Ten years ago you could count the available cloud applications on the fingers of one hand. Today, they are everywhere. CIOs and CTOs in 2015 are as much geeks as they are businessmen – because cloud investing has become a lucrative business in and of itself.

Hubgets, Or How To Get ROI Without Dwelling On It

Photo by Michael Longmire on Unsplash

Moving into cloud territory isn’t about getting a rapid return on investment (ROI), but about giving your company a competitive edge (i.e. speeding up your time to market). Those who are obsessed with ROI are missing the point of cloud apps, and cloud computing in general.

CTOs and CIOs today are savvier than ever, no longer fixated on the ROI for cloud investments – though it’s still a pressing issue for many. According to Brett Gillett of Softchoice, a Toronto-based software reseller, two years ago business leaders would make one-to-one comparisons to see if the cloud version of a certain service fared better. Today, executives are on much better terms with cloud services (SaaS, Paas, IaaS, UCaaS). And here’s why.

Cloud Saas, IaaS, PaaS – A $112 Billion Market by 2019 [IDC]

Photo by Joshua Earle on Unsplash

IDC reveals in a report that the cloud software market reached $48.8 billion in revenue in 2014 (a 24.4% growth from the year ago) and is projected to be worth in excess of $112 billion by 2019. SaaS (Software as a Service) will play an instrumental role, outpacing traditional software product delivery by a rate of 5-to1. $1 of every $4.59 spent on software will directed at the cloud software model, IDC predicts.

The analytics firm sounds the horn on a huge opportunity, advising all major IT product vendors to put this strategic goal at the top of their to-do lists: figure out how to capitalize on the cloud services transformation. However, CIOs and IT reps at various cloud-centric companies seem to be fully aware that the doors to service heaven are wide open.

IT as a Business – ITaaB

Photo by Sergi Kabrera on Unsplash

The annual Computerworld Forecast Study is out, revealing the IT priorities for this year in key spending areas like new technologies, and staffing up. According to the IDG-funded research, IT budgets are increasing and cloud services in particular are booming. IT is slowly but surely becoming a business in and of itself inside every company today.

IT budgets have not only remained in place, but they’ve actually increased in 2015 by 4.3%. The spike potentially reflects a shift in IT decision making thanks to a younger generation of leaders.

It’s Sheer Genius! Machine Learning Tech Will Make Boredom Profitable

Photo by Cloé fontaine on Unsplash

Researchers in Barcelona, Spain have developed a “boredom detector” that they plan to present at the UbiComp conference next week in Japan. The technology is based on an algorithm that looks at your mobile activity and determines your boredom levels. Because boredom leads to depression, the technology could essentially save lives. But it could be profitable too

Increased Collaboration Touted As the #1 ‘Symptom’ of Cloud Adoption in HBR Study

Photo by Josh Calabrese on Unsplash

It’s no mystery that enterprises today are racing to give themselves a competitive edge by moving operations from on-premise to cloud. This ‘maturity’ is apparently at its highest in 2015, with Harvard Business Review Analytic Services reporting that 44 percent of respondents in a study reported increased revenue, while 36 percent posted a spike in profits.

Perhaps more interestingly (to us, at least), the same survey found that cloud adoption enabled unprecedented levels of scalability and increased collaboration across the surveyed companies – 452 business and IT professionals.

Security No Longer the ‘Top Worry’ in Cloud Computing

Photo by Matthew Henry on Unsplash

Chief Technology Officers (CTO) and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in today’s competitive landscape are often faced with making the tough decision to move operations (partially or entirely) to the cloud. This means letting go of legacy infrastructures – such as on-premises PBX phone systems – and embracing the versatility of Internet-based solutions.

For most of its existence, the cloud – particularly business-oriented cloud solutions – has been plagued by one major concern: security. It’s understandable. Keeping your data locked in a room on your site offers a sense of control. But it’s no safer than in a data center managed by experts who make it their business to secure the data. Data centers are a solid investment today, and executives are beginning to wake up and smell the roses.

The Cloud Is Growing And You’d Better Grow With It

Technology almost evolves by itself these days. Wherever you look, the systems currently in use are being obsoleted by a last-minute invention.

Cloud computing is probably the best example of this. It’s the very definition of “larger than the sum of all parts” and it is growing alarmingly fast, as new features get added every day, new scenarios emerge, and whole terabytes of data get sucked into clouds everywhere every second. Service providers stand to gain immensely, but only if they play their cards right.
