Twenty years of VoipNow

On 30 May 2006, 4PSA launched VoipNow, the VoIP control panel for service providers. Twenty years is a long time in communications. Technologies change. Business models adapt. Customer expectations grow. Yet some products stay relevant because they start from a real need and keep evolving. That is the story of VoipNow.

Twenty years of VoipNow

A different communications market

In 2004-2006, the communications market was hard for new players. Much of IP telephony was still shaped by proprietary systems. Meanwhile, open standards such as SIP were only starting to change the market. Quality of service was also a major concern.

Providers that wanted to offer voice services had few options. Most solutions were expensive, complex to deploy, and difficult to adapt to a provider business model. The market was dominated by large telecom vendors. An OECD analysis from 2006 showed that VoIP was still moving through questions of licensing, numbering, interconnection, and emergency access.

VoIP technology was promising, but many organizations still questioned its reliability. Network quality, interoperability, firewall traversal, and provisioning were daily challenges. Quality depended on strict control of delay, jitter, and packet loss. Additionally, NAT and firewall behavior could break sessions. Contemporary engineering guidance recommended network readiness assessment before deployment.

The opportunity we saw

At that time, 4PSA had already spent four years working with service providers around the world. Most were hosting providers, but we also worked with ISPs and MSPs.

As a result, we understood their businesses. We knew their challenges. We saw a growing demand from customers who wanted modern communications.

Providers needed a platform that could help them deliver such services efficiently and profitably.

From customer need to product vision

The idea for VoipNow started with a customer request.

One of our hosting customers wanted to expand into VoIP services and asked us to help. We analyzed the available products and quickly realized that none of them matched the needs of service providers.

Instead of adapting an existing solution, we decided to build a new platform from the ground up.

Building a communications platform for service providers

Our goal was ambitious. We wanted to create a communications platform that providers could host either in their own infrastructure or on customer premises. We wanted to make deployment simple, management intuitive, and service delivery scalable.

The result was a Linux-based platform with a browser interface, multitenancy, and four management levels. Providers could manage their entire communications business from a single environment.

At a time when hardware appliances dominated the market, this approach was a significant departure from industry practices.

The launch of VoipNow

On 30 May 2006, VoipNow was officially launched. It introduced a new way for providers to deliver voice services. It combined advanced telephony features with web-based management, flexible service provisioning, and integrated real-time billing.

More than 350 companies tested the beta version in the weeks before launch.

For many providers, VoipNow opened the door to a new business opportunity.

Why VoipNow mattered

VoipNow was designed around the way service providers work. It brought together voice services, customer management, service provisioning, routing, and charging into a single system.

Its multitenant architecture enabled providers, resellers, customers, and users to operate within the same platform while maintaining clear separation and control.

This model helped providers launch services faster and scale their operations more efficiently.

Growing together with our partners

In time, VoipNow grew alongside its customers. Many of the capabilities added over the years came directly from real-world deployments, customer feedback, and evolving market requirements.

Some customers have been using VoipNow since the very beginning. Their businesses grew together with the product. Their challenges helped shape new features, new integrations, and new opportunities.

Those long-term relationships remain one of the clearest signs of the trust VoipNow has earned over the years.

From IP PBX to Unified Communications

As telecommunications advanced, VoipNow evolved with them. What started as an IP PBX platform gradually became a complete Unified Communications solution.

Voice, video, conferencing, presence, messaging, contact center capabilities, APIs, automation, cloud deployments, and distributed architecture became part of the platform.

Throughout this evolution, one principle remained unchanged: helping providers deliver better communications experiences.

Entering the AI era

Today, VoipNow continues its evolution through AI-powered voice technologies. The latest version introduced voice AI agents integration, MCP server support, AI-powered automation, and new tools that help providers build intelligent communications workflows.

The platform continues to expand while preserving the flexibility, openness, and service provider focus that defined it from the beginning.

The technologies are different, yet the mission remains the same.

Twenty years of trust

A twenty-year milestone is ultimately about people.

It reflects the trust of customers who relied on VoipNow to support their businesses. It demonstrates the contribution of our partners who helped build successful services around the platform.

Also, it speaks volumes about the dedication of the team that designed, developed, tested, supported, documented, and improved VoipNow over two decades.

Every release, every feature, every deployment, and every success story reflects the work of many talented people.

Thank you

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this journey.

A heartfelt thank you to our team members, past and present, whose dedication and expertise made VoipNow what it is today.

Thank you to our customers and partners who trusted us, challenged us, and grew with us over the years.

Your support has been the foundation of this success.

The journey continues

On 30 May 2006, VoipNow started as a provider-first communications platform built to solve a real problem.

Twenty years later, it continues to connect people, support businesses, and evolve alongside the communications industry.

The business will continue to evolve. New technologies will emerge. New challenges will appear. What will not change is our commitment to helping providers deliver better communications services.

Happy birthday, VoipNow. Here’s to the next chapter.
