To fulfill today’s growing demands and avoid being crushed by competitors, leaving the past behind is a good way to cement your business and assist your growth plan.
Private branch exchange (PBX) has come a long way since its inception in the early ’90s, when operators had to manage switchboards manually, using cord circuits. Today’s business phone systems use software and the Internet as a cheaper, faster, more versatile and more efficient way to communicate and collaborate in business environments. We’ve touched this topic before, but today we will focus on one, very important factor to consider when choosing your business phone system: obsolescence.
Don’t start out on a limb
What would you prefer:
- a business phone system where you purchase new hardware outright, pay for maintenance, software upgrades, the long distance charges and any change you want to make to your system (such as adding new phone lines), or…
- …to outsource this hassle to a provider who delivers it in a single package, on your existing phone systems (including mobiles)?
One of the biggest mistakes companies make when faced with new demand is to try and expand their network vertically, adding strain on an old foundation that starts to shake as new workloads are added. This old-fashioned mindset involves cost-prohibitive hardware and software, limited storage capacity, and an ongoing hassle to keep up with the times (i.e. new features and functions that may or may not be supported / compatible). There are advantages to keeping operations in-house, but not if your biggest fear is change. As for the security concern, hosted solutions stack well against affordable, on-premise safeguards.

Now, picture this. Everyone in your ballpark has outsourced the responsibility of owning, operating, securing and maintaining the hardware and software used to conduct business calls, allowing them to focus on core competency. For fear of the new, your plan is different. You stick to tradition and:
- make a big upfront investment to secure fixed lines and bulky hardware
- pay your service provider upfront for more service than you’re likely to actually use
- forego advanced calling features for fear of change
- renounce a seamless Unified Communications experience (connecting locations, remote and mobile workers into a single platform) because you don’t think it’s a priority or even know it’s possible
- give up on remote management from one portal with multiple levels of control (multi-tenancy)
- don’t get any scalability by not having the ability to add lines as you grow and select services on-demand
