For years, the web vs. desktop apps rivalry has led to passionate debates and dramatic terms like battles and wars. This article does not champion either of these environments. It’s just a personal account of how I dealt with the web vs. the desktop dilemma so that I could make the most of Hubgets, on my own terms.
Aside from phones, web browsers are perhaps our most personal tools. A browser needs to be 100% customizable if you want to make it truly yours, but sadly that’s not the case with the ones available today. Many people sometimes resort to using two browsers to get the best of all worlds. But there is one new contender that promises to live up to everyone’s expectations for the first time in browser history.
Promoted with the tagline, “a browser for our friends,” Vivaldi is the brainchild of former Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner. Along with a dedicated engineering team, he achieved what can be considered the most customizable and usable browser yet.
Services offload their computationally expensive tasks into workers. Think of software that converts video from its original format to a web standard. This kind of job can be considered long-running, even for state-of-the-art hardware. The web app can’t convert the video, it doesn’t have access to the software and, even if it did, we’d have little control over what ends up on our servers. The service used by the app could convert the video, but it would take valuable processing time shifting though millions of requests.
