What would you do if money suddenly wasn’t a problem anymore? Some people would choose a life of indolence and non-stop partying, others would succumb to drugs or alcohol, perhaps others would blow it all on gambling. But some, a select few, would change nothing.
Wealth doesn’t affect everyone in the same way. Some are lucky enough to have found their vocation, to do fulfilling work that affects the world in a positive way, not necessarily for their personal gain. Bette Davis once said this in her 1962 autobiography, “The Lonely Life.”
To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lovely labor, to be given the chance to create, is the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy.
– Bette Davis
Ruth Elizabeth “Bette” Davis (April 5, 1908 – October 6, 1989) is regarded as one of the greatest actresses in cinema history. She starred in crime melodramas, romantic dramas, historical and period films and occasional comedies, in which she preferred to play unsympathetic, sardonic characters. She was noted for her iconic cigarette and she co-starred in 1930’s Dark Victory alongside future-president of the USA, Ronald Reagan.
Davis had a mercurial temper and would sometimes get into arguments with the film crew and studio executives. She felt strongly about her vision and was described by her peers as a combative perfectionist. Davis died of breast cancer at the age of 81.
